The United Nations is easily the most feckless and useless international organization ever. Americans pay too much money and get too little in return from membership in this interational organziation. It is time for the United States to leave it. Let me explain why…
Background:
At the end of World War I, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proposed a League of Nations that would prevent another war as horrendous as World War I from ever happening again. Unfortunately for Wilson, the United States never signed on to the treaty as the United States Senate refused to pass it. The League of Nations eventually slipped into obscurity. During this time, the Great Depression and national socialism led to a second world war.
The United Nations was created out of the ashes of World War II. In 1945 the United States, along with the Allied Powers from the war decided to create an organization which would bring together the nations of the world in an effort to never have a world war again.
The Allied Powers created a “Security Council” which consists of the five World War II winners, the U.S., Russia, France, England, and China. Originally fifty-one countries signed on to the compact and now there are one-hundred and ninety-three participating countries.
Problem #1 - The make up of U.N. Security Council.
At one time, the United States, Russia, China, France, and Britain were allies. At the end of World War II these countries were the winners and the most powerful nations on earth. Now the five permanent members of the Security Council are from the same countries, but times have changed.
Since the U.N. Charter was signed Russia has undergone a revolution from communism to glasnost and perestroika, and now is a full-blown dictatorship with Vladmir Putin at the head. China has its revolution in the 1950’s and is a complete and total communist nation with a repressive and genocidal leadership.
These two communist countries are quite often in direct conflict with the west and the free democracies of the world. Each member of the Security Council has a vote, including a veto. Whenever a decision needs to be made to show support for a struggling country Russian and/or China will veto the show of support. They are in direct conflict with the needs and opportunities of the free world.
There are also ten elected countries who participate on the Security Council in two-year terms that have a vote, but no veto power. This is the crux of the problem when you let countries such as Algeria on the Council to vote, and communists the veto.
Problem #2: The countries that have been allowed into the U.N.
As stated earlier, 193 countries are currently represented in the United Nations including some of the most dictatorial and brutal regimes in the world. Countries such as Cuba, Iran, China, and Sudan to name a few. As an example of the stupidity of the U.N. you have these countries sitting on U.N committees such as the committee for human rights. On the 2025 membership of the Status on Women, you have such legendary women’s rights countries, such as Congo, Egypt, and Afghanistan!
Don't beleive me? Here is the official roster...
Problem #3 Corruption:
The United Nations is one of the most corrupt organizations to exist. There are multiple examples of this fact, but a specific example will refer to the U.N.’s “Oil for Food Program.” After the first Gulf War in which Iraqi president Saddam Hussien was allowed to sell oil to purchase food and medicine for the Iraqi people. The U.N. knew this was not happening yet ignored what Hussien was doing. In fact, “Saddam Hussein exploited the program, earning some $1.7 billion through kickbacks and surcharges, and $10.9 billion through illegal oil smuggling, according to a 2004 Central Intelligence Agency investigation.”
The Council on Foreign Relations report...
Not only was the system corrupt but the son of U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan, Kojo Annan, received multiple payments of over $400,000 while receiving a 10-million-dollar contract for the company he was working for. Calls for Kofi Annan to step down as U.N. General Secretary were rebuffed and Annan was allowed to stay in office because he had not personally been rewarded. Yeah right…This allowed Saddam Hussein to by weapons and war materials under the U.N.’s nose. This is one of the more egregious examples of the U.N.’s corruption.
Problem #4 - Its clear anti-zionist bent…
The problem with the United Nations is that it is in fact made up of nations. Many of these nations include those who are dead set on the destruction of the State of Israel. The U.N. was the agency who created the State of Israel in 1948 and at the same time has been one of the biggest purveyors of antisemitism in the modern world.
Israel has been attacked on multiple times by its neighbors including in 1948, after the U.N. agreed to Israel existing, five of Israel’s neighbors invaded the country. There have been major wars in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982 and several other skirmishes including the most recent war with the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah after the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack
.
Israel has been repeatedly condemned for protecting its country and the Israeli people. It has been accused of genocide, apartheid, and many other crimes against humanity. None of these have been true and the United Nations knows this. “From 2015 through 2024, the UN General Assembly has adopted 164 resolutions on Israel and 84 on other countries.”
November 10, 1975, the UN—to its eternal discredit—declared Zionism to be "a form of racism and racial discrimination." The late Senator Patrick Moynihan delivered a speech condemning this action. He was a fine American.
A very recent example of antisemitism was the firing of a UN worker who didn’t call the Israel - Hamas conflict as a genocide. While researching genocide throughout the modern world, this UN researcher would not classify what Israel has been doing since October 7, 2023, as genocide.
The firing of the UN researcher......
The U.N. has a serious anti-zionist streak that the United States should be no part of and neither should any other self-respecting democracies.
Problem #5 - Its sub-organizations:
UNRWA: The United Nations Relief and Work Agency is a supposed neutral organization which assists the Palestinian people since the 1948 invasion of Israel by five of its Arab neighbors. The U.S. is the single largest donor at around $300 million annually. During the most recent conflict between Hamas and Israel it was learned that UNRWA workers were actually members of Hamas that assisted in the October 7, 2023, massacre of Israeli soldiers and citizens. In fact, the former leader of Hamas Yahya Al-Sinwar (deceased) had a personal bodyguard that was a UNRWA teacher!
The recent Arab-Israeli war has released a treasure trove of proof that UNRWA is not only a corrupt sub-organization of the U.N., but a terrorist-supporting one as well.
UNIFIL: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was created by the United Nations to keep a separation between the terrorist group Hezbollah and Israel. Unfortunately, during the recent incursion into Lebanon by the Israelis in response to Hezbollah shelling of Israel it was discovered that Hezbollah created a vast tunnel system to smuggle weapons and supplies to the border of Israel. If UNIFIL is not corrupt, it’s blind and I am not sure which is worse.
Here is an article about UNIFIL
Problem #6 (I promise last one):
This is listed as the last problem, but it definitely is not ranked according to importance. The U.N. has a rape problem. Multiple reports of multiple troops from multiple countries have been credibly accused of raping the very people they were in charge of protecting.
“Haiti is just one of many countries where peacekeepers have raped women and girls, or sexually exploited them in exchange for food or support. My colleagues have also reported on rape by African Union forces in Somalia, French and UN peacekeepers in Central African Republic and UN troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While the UN can investigate allegations of sexual abuse and rape, peacekeeper accountability is up to the country that sends the troops. As a result, prosecutions have been rare even after media coverage and outrage.”
The article on the UN rape issue...
This is unconscionable and the U.N. has done extraordinarily little, in my opinion, to correct the situation. They have assigned people to observe the troops, but from reports in the media, this has done little to quell this disgrace.
Final Thoughts:
The United Nations was created in 1945 and has been a failure since its inception. The idea of a world government organization has failed to consider the number one rule of large bureaucracies, they all end up corrupt and useless.
The United States supplies approximately one-third of the United Nations’ funding. In 2022, the United States spent 18 billion dollars on the United Nations. The U.N. is in New York City and is technically an international zone with extraterritorial privileges. This needs to end with the withdrawal of the United States.
The United States should leave the organization and bring other western-style democracies with it. This group of democracies could have a similar role in the world without the corruption, rape, and antisemitic viewpoints. The reason I believe this would work is that democracies do not go to war with one another, they talk, they argue, but they never go to war. There are countries in the U.N. today who are at war with one another.
Britain, France, the United States, Germany, Poland, Japan, Brazil, and others could form to protect human rights, assist growing and/or fledgling democracies, and stand as a counterbalance to the informal working relationships of communist and dictatorial countries.
This idea may be a stretch, but I am a dreamer. I just do not want my tax dollars to go to an organization that has so many drawbacks.
Thank you for digging deep and sharing!
Very interesting and informative Matt. Nice job!
